🩹 Recovery and What to Expect
Recovery time depends on the type of surgery, the size/location of the hernia, and your overall health, but most people can go home the same day (outpatient procedure).
General Post-Procedure Guidelines:
Activity: Rest when tired, but walk daily to boost circulation and prevent complications. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for usually 4 to 6 weeks, or as directed by your surgeon.
Pain Management: Pain or soreness around the incision is normal for the first few days and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
Incision Care: Keep the wound clean and dry. Follow your surgeon's specific instructions for dressing changes and when you can shower or bathe.
Diet: Drink plenty of fluids and eat a fiber-rich diet to prevent constipation, as straining can put pressure on the repair site.
🚩 When to Contact Your Doctor Immediately
While complications are rare, seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
Fever (over $101^\circ\text{F}$ or $38.3^\circ\text{C}$).
Signs of infection at the incision (increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus).
Severe or increasing pain not relieved by medication.
Persistent nausea or vomiting.
